You might think I would support this:

France May Make It Illegal To Promote Extreme Thinness

But I’m afraid it’s just a slippery slope. Next, it will be legislation that makes it illegal to show extreme fatness in magazines, runways, etc. Who is going to be the judge of what (or who) is extremely fat and extremely thin? I’m not sure I like where this could go.

I see their point, of course. They feel that allowing emaciated women to walk  runways, appear in magazines and promote products on television and in print may send the wrong message to young women ( and old women, for that matter). That’s a valid concern. And in part, the bill attempts to go after creators of websites that promote anorexia. Promoting such a thing is despicable, of course.

But I’m not sure creating broad legislation, that could sanction everything from a too-thin model walking a runway to the writer of a how-to on being a  bulimic,  is the answer. I’d like to see less legislation and something more along the lines of a public awareness campaign, similar to Dove’s Real Beauty campaign, maybe.

What do you think? Is this a case of government standing up for women by forcing a healthier image? Or a case of government putting their nose where it doesn’t belong?
